Theatre isn’t all about being the centre of attention. It builds confidence and self-esteem, challenges an individual's comfort level and breaks down social barriers.The STC Academy introduces participants of all ages and experience levels to the magic of theatre in a supportive, social, and non-threatening environment. Our classes are led by skilled and highly-trained instructors with extensive teaching backgrounds. Students are exposed to a wide range of games, exercises, and experiences that are tailored to any skill level. All classes end with a presentation for family and friends. PLAYTIME THEATRE lays the groundwork for budding performers in a playful exploration of creativity and fun. This class encourages cooperation and creativity through theatre games, movement and vocal work. Participants use theatre exercises to learn about basic story-telling, stagecraft, and physical and vocal expression. 

Three sessions are held over nine consecutive weekends, in the fall, winter, and spring terms. Each session culminates in a special recital performance for an invited audience.

MEREDITH ZWICKER | Playtime Instructor

Meredith has taught acting and music to students of all ages, from absolute beginners to accomplished professionals, for over twenty years. She has taught for some of the country's leading youth education organizations for the arts including York University, Neptune Theatre School, Arts Express, and Shakespeare in Action. She has extensive training that includes an M.F.A. in Acting from York University and a B.A. with Combined Honours in Theatre and Music from Dalhousie University. As a professional actor, singer and musician she has worked in theatres across Canada and internationally.

 

For ages 8 to 12

Exploration and fun are the key words for Sudbury Theatre Centre’s comprehensive all-arts experience during the March Break. STC offers a varied week of drama and arts from acting, music and movement to visual art. The program includes collaborative activities and games designed to build imagination, confidence, creative expression and lasting friendships. Scene and character work become part of the program as students ready for a final showcase for parents and friends.

DISCOVERY DRAMA
Saturdays from 10.15 to 11.45am

This class is designed to offer students an opportunity to awaken talent within themselves and to gain confidence as well as learn some of the basics of performance.

VOCAL DISCOVERY
Saturdays from noon to 1.30pm

Students explore basic vocal techniques, rhythm and movement in a fun, energetic and inclusive environment. Each week focuses on a different genre as students learn to sing while expanding their musical vocabulary. From the Beatles to Bruno Mars, the perfect opportunity to discover your inner Rock Star!

For ages 12 to 17

VOCAL DEVELOPMENT
Saturdays from 10.15 to 11.45am

An opportunity for teens to learn vocal techniques while exploring different genres of music, from Classic Rock to Hip Hop. Participants expand their musical vocabularies while combining singing with movement and harmonies. The full performance experience!

DEVELOPMENT DRAMA
Saturdays from noon to 1.30pm

This class offers students who have mastered some of the basics the opportunity to develop their performance skills through both theatre exercises and scripted scenes.

CHELSEA PAPINEAU | drama instructor

Chelsea is a graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles. Her performances have taken her up and down the West Coast of the United States and all the way to Canada. Acting credits include Romeo and Juliet, Oklahoma! and Carousel. Her Sudbury Credits for Theatre Cambrian include Annie Get Your Gun and Beauty and the Beast. Chelsea’s training in voice, improvisation, dance and stage combat are an asset to her teaching.

KELLY PERRAS | vocal instructor

A Sudbury native, Kelly performed in her first musical on the STC stage at age 9 and graduated from Sudbury Secondary School for the Performing Arts. She has studied voice with Marion Harvey-Hannah at Cambrian College, and jazz artist Shannon Gunn from Humber College. As a performer, Kelly has appeared at many of Toronto's best venues. She is thrilled to be part of the STC family, helping students discover their own unique voices.

This unique program engages students in the process of creating a major theatrical production, culminating in a series of performances for parents and the community. Participants develop their performance abilities in acting, voice and movement, and contribute to the creation of props, sets, and costumes.

For ages 10 to 18
REHEARSALS: February to June 2017
Sundays from 5 to 8pm and Mondays from 4.30 to 7.30pm

REBECCA DESMARAIS | associate director

Currently the General Manager for Classic Theatre Cobalt, Rebecca has a Specialized Honours Degree in Drama, a Double Minor in Philosophy and Sociology from York University as well as her BEd from the University of Toronto. She has training in performance, directing, production and technical theatre. As a  teacher, Rebecca has taught child actors on-set, secondary school Drama and English and theatre production. She has also interned in the education department at Tarragon Theatre and Mixed Company Theatre in Toronto.
